Join Worldwide Monitoring Day: September 18

Last year a few Huakailani families participated. It is a great experience for the family.

World Water Monitoring Day: Saturday September 18, 2010 from 9a.m.-11a.m. World Water Monitoring Day™, officially celebrated on September 18 throughout the world, is an international education and outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by engaging citizens to conduct basic monitoring of their local water bodies.

Hui o Ko'olaupoko and community volunteers will participate in World Water Monitoring Day by hosting two monitoring sites within the Ko'olaupoko moku of O'ahu. Sites include: Waimanalo Beach Park (meet at the lifeguard stand) and Kailua Beach Park (meet at the Kailua Canoe Club Hale). The public is invited to join with more experienced monitoring volunteers at these two locations on September 18, 2010, from 9 a.m. to 11a.m. to sample water quality in the ocean and nearby streams.

Do you know about Non-Source Point pollution?

Whether you have a stream running through your backyard, business, local school or park, protecting it is a good idea. Many property owners upstream may not realize that what they do on their land impacts other residents and water quality downstream. Every day pollutants such as trash, yard waste (e.g., grass clippings, leaves, prunings, or fruits), paint, construction debris (e.g., stockpiles of soil, sand, or gravel), used motor oil, fertilizers and pesticides, and dog waste reach our urban streams. Trash on stream banks are unsightly and unsanitary for humans and wildlife. Even organic materials such as yard waste are unacceptable to dump along streams banks. When these materials get into the stream cycle, they decompose and eliminate critical, life-giving oxygen from the water. As a result, streams become unsightly and emit foul odors.
