Calling all Huakailani Environmental Heroes!
We are kicking off Year 2 of our participation in the Adopt-a-Block program on July 18. Sunday.
Huakailani School completed their first year with the Adopt-A-Block Program in 2009-2010. They received the Good Neighbor Award from in May 2010 from the city and county of Honolulu for their volunteer efforts and for making a positive impact on their community.
This program integrates with Mayor Mufi Hanneman's concept of the 21st century Ahupua'a, but also requirements under the City's storm Water Management Program to further reduce the amounts of pollutants entering the storm drain systems.
The work that Huakailani Volunteers do with this program helps to improve the quality of water running into the Hamakua Stream and the storm water drains of Kailua.
The students and families of Huakailani School have made a commitment to help keep Kailua Town clean one street at a time and improve the quality and conditions of the community by keeping pollutants off of the City roads and connected waterbodies. The streets that Huakailani has adopted are especially important because of the proximity to the streams and ocean.
